What is Fluoride?
Fluoride is commonly used to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities. Fluoride supplements like Nature’s Plus Chewable Dental Probiotic are recommended for daily use between 6 months to 16 years. Colgate’s Total toothpaste and Act’s mouthwash with ADA seal of acceptance are advised to be used twice a day for children and adults. Water fluoridation had decreased cavities in children almost up to three times. Many patients are concerned about fluoride due to its link with lower IQ in children and skeletal fluorosis in adults. The occurrence of joint stiffness and pain is extremely rare and tends to result from long term exposure to high levels of fluoride. Larger data and high quality studies are needed to find actual link between lower IQ in children and fluoride. If you are concerned about fluoride intake, you can reduce exposure by –
1. Find alternate source of drinking water such as bottled water. I prefer Essentia Water.
2. Use a fluoride filter for tap water such as Waterdrop 10UA Under Sink Water Filter System or the Brita Ultra Max Filtering Dispense.
3. Use fluoride free toothpaste like Tom’s of Maine.
